SEO & AI Search Optimisation
Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making a website findable and credible enough to rank in search results. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the same discipline pointed at a newer surface: getting cited inside AI answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. ART Digital Media does both together, for UK small businesses, because in practice they are mostly the same job.
SEO and GEO are not two separate projects
Most of the work overlaps. A page that AI engines can cite is, almost always, a page Google already wanted to rank: it loads fast, it can be crawled, it says clearly what it is, and it answers the question it claims to answer.
What genuinely differs is smaller than the marketing around it suggests:
- Search sends you a visitor. AI answers the visitor directly. So the unit that matters shifts from the page to the passage — a self-contained paragraph that makes sense quoted on its own, away from the rest of your site.
- Being the answer beats being the link. A page that buries its answer under 600 words of preamble can still rank. It rarely gets quoted.
- Machines need to know what you are. Structured data and consistent business details do more work when the reader is a model rather than a person.
- Your reputation is assembled off your website. AI answers draw on what other sources say about you, so reviews, directories and mentions elsewhere feed directly into the answer.
Anyone selling GEO as an entirely new discipline requiring an entirely new budget is selling you the overlap twice.
What's included
- Technical foundations — crawlability, indexation, Core Web Vitals, clean URLs and real 404s
- Structured data (Schema.org JSON-LD) so machines can parse what your business does
- Answer-first content structure, written to be quotable in isolation
- Keyword and SERP research grounded in live data, not guesswork
- Local search — Google Business Profile, consistent business details, location pages where there is genuine local demand
- AI crawler access,
llms.txt, and citation-ready page structure - Search Console measurement, so the reporting is Google's numbers rather than ours
Who it's for
UK small businesses that are invisible in search and want to understand why — and businesses already ranking who are watching AI answers start to intercept the clicks they used to get.
How we work
- Audit — what is technically broken, what you rank for now, and who is beating you.
- Evidence — live search data for the terms your customers actually type, checked against the real results pages. Search volume alone is misleading.
- Fix the foundations — crawlability, speed, structure and schema first. Content on weak foundations is wasted effort.
- Build the content that earns position — answer-first, sourced, and structured to be cited.
- Measure in Search Console — impressions, position and clicks, reported honestly, including when something has not worked.
We did this to our own site first
This website is the worked example. It was rebuilt from a single-page app into pre-rendered static pages so search engines and AI crawlers get real HTML rather than an empty shell. It carries per-page canonicals, Organization and Service structured data, FAQ schema, an llms.txt for AI crawlers, and a blog written answer-first. Google Search Console is connected, so the numbers we work from are measured rather than assumed.
Where our own visibility is weak, we know exactly which terms are weak and why — which is the same diagnosis we would run for you.
Working locally
Local search needs local specifics, so those have their own pages: SEO in Cambridge and SEO in Peterborough. Everything above applies UK-wide and remotely.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO aims to rank a page in a list of search results. GEO — generative engine optimisation — aims to get your content quoted inside an AI-generated answer in tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. The technical foundations are shared, so most of the work counts for both. GEO adds passage-level structure, clearer entity signals, and attention to what sources elsewhere say about you.
Do I need both SEO and GEO?
For most small businesses they are one piece of work, not two. Google still sends the majority of traffic, so classic SEO remains the priority, while the same foundations are what make a page citable by AI. We would rather do one job properly than sell the same fixes under two headings.
How long does SEO take to work?
Longer than anyone would like. Technical fixes can register within weeks, but competitive positions typically take months of consistent work, and a new site takes longer than an established one. Anyone promising fast rankings for a competitive term is either guessing or targeting terms nobody searches.
Do you guarantee first-page rankings?
No, and it is worth being wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google's results, and guaranteed-ranking offers usually rely on targeting terms with no real search demand so the guarantee is technically met. What we commit to is measurable work, reported from your own Search Console data.
Can you help if my website was built by someone else?
Yes. We audit and improve existing sites whoever built them, on most common platforms including WordPress. If the underlying build is the thing holding you back, we will say so rather than charging monthly to work around it.
